A Weighty Matter

Every trip presents its own challenges, and this one is certainly no exception. To the contrary.  We’re going to Antarctica — the entire trip is a challenge!

One of the challenges I learned about this week is posed by the baggage rules on the charter flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia.  Turns out, there’s a carry on limit of one bag per person, weighing no more than 17.6 pounds.  (This apparently excludes such items as a purse and what was described to me as “a normal sized camera bag.”)

There’s a generous allowance for checked bags on the charter — two bags per person weighing no more than 66 pounds total.  But this isn’t much help, because our international flight from the U.S. to Argentina has a one-bag/50-pound limit and, in any event, I never put my camera equipment or other valuables in my checked bags.  Also, since we were planning on taking our indispensable Muck Boots onto the planes as well, the carry on rule will indeed pose a challenge.

One more thing to worry about!

  1. Im wondering about the idea of wearing the heavy boots (though it will be a big hassle during security) and packing slippers for the flights? Hmmm, if only the rental option wasn’t so risky!!
